Leading players start push to make green ammonia a bunker fuel

London (Quantum Commodity Intelligence) - A group of 23 industry players are conducting a joint study into the potential adoption of ammonia as a carbon-free marine fuel, the group announced Friday.

Equinor, Itochu, Mitsui Trafigura and TotalEnergies are among the companies involved in the study into the adoption of green ammonia, produced from green hydrogen that comes from renewable sources, as an alternative bunker fuel in the future.

"Ammonia is already a globally traded and transported commodity, but for it to be widely accepted as a marine fuel we need to help demystify the risks and safety measures needed so that they are understood by policymakers and the maritime industry," said Rasmus Bach Nielsen, Global Head of Fuel Decarbonisation for Trafigura.

The International Maritime Association has a target of cutting carbon emissions in the shipping industry by 50% by 2050 compared to 2008.
